Over at Law and Liberty I have a new post on geopolitics. It’s a review of the latest book by Robert D. Kaplan: https://www.lawliberty.org/2018/10/01/american-power-in-a-medieval-world/.
His books are always excellent and offer “big picture” analysis of major world trends.
Kaplan is extremely well-read but also has his “nose to the ground” and so combines understanding and perception of strategic changes in the world. His are the books senior business planners should be reading.
Fashion pages in the US do not tire of pushing a basic trope of domestic politics: minorities in the cities are nice cool people open to the world but others are nativists, bad, and really, really frumpy. Kaplan’s work is a warning to fashion executives that plenty of people of colour in cities across the world are not just nativist but imperialist, intent on the reassertion of ancient power. Much of the world’s landmass, Eurasia, is already being reshaped by imperialism and intensifications are coming, with profound implications for identity and prestige, and therewith ideals of beauty and mores. Markets are going to change, significantly.
